What do we think of them? apart from being very cool! How do they compare with other depictions of elves...apart from santas!

I think I'd probably say that they're the definitive depiction of Elves. I haven't seen that many differing depicitions, though... even in my own work, when writing about Elves I try to make them as Tolkienish as possible without actually ripping him off.

The Celtic elves had some kind of thing where iron (or any form of it, like steel) was poisonous to them
D&D elves are pretty much the same, with the exception of having a limited lifespan

I'm not sure exactly... I know I've read it in a bunch of different books.
As for D&D... wel that's just D&D, so... MAGIC MISSILE!!

I prefer the Tolkien version of elves to the one's in fairy tales which were childlike imps to evil pranksters.
I haven't yet read, "Midsummer Nights dream" but I have seen some of the movie. Those fairys were wonderful too, quite different from the ones in children's stories such as Peter Pan's Tinkerbell.

Something I was wondering about, did elves have horses of their own?... stables and such?
I know they had a particular method of riding their animals such as without saddle or bridle, but so far that's all I've come across.

Good question, Wren. I haven't ever heard of such a thing, but I think that some elves kept their horses permanently (didn't Legolas hold on to Arod?), so they had to keep them somewhere.

I always got the impression that they lived like equals wiht them. I know that in Irish lore Elves didn't ride horses, they rode Polkas, a kind of animalistic sprite.

*brings the topic right back down into the gutter*
Well, that gives a whole new meaning to "doing the polka". ;D
